Downwinder: Tiwi to Galu

From December to March during the Kaskazi Trade summer season we run trips from Tiwi lagoon river mouth heading South passing by 40 Thieves Beach Bar, Nomads and ultimately landing back at Galu Beach, Kenyaways Kite Village.

This Downwinder is approximately 20 kilometres long and is our most popular choice for an afternoon of pure excitement in the waves!

During the Monsoon Kouzi season which pumps from June until September, our Downwinder tours reverse with the wind now travelling north. Setting off at Kenyaways Kite Village, we tackle the 20km’s back towards Tiwi.

Within the Kaskazi season, with left hand Northerly cross on shore conditions, the swell on the reef tends to be fairly mellow and it is this period that we really push visiting kiters who have never experienced the Downwinder sensation to join in on the action!

During the Kouzi season, with right hand Southerly cross shore winds we often benefit from perfect “straight down the line” kiting with a much more aggressive swell size and wind velocity. This season’s reef riding is at times more suited for stronger riders seeking larger sets.
